Trip to Rockefeller Center |
In December 2007, a group of PALS students—along with Professors Liz Lilley, Marisol Garcia, and Jessica Wilson—took a holiday trip to New York City. The trip began at Herald Square and Macy’s on 6th Avenue where they saw their first holiday windows. They then walked up to Bryant Park to see the lighted tree there, along with the holiday shops bustling with customers, and the ice rink that is created every year in the park.

After perusing the colorful and interesting shops, spending a little money, and enjoying some hot chocolate, the trip continued up 5th Avenue. The students marvelled at the beautiful window displays of department stores Lord & Taylor’s and Saks Fifth Avenue, famous for their annual holiday decorations. |
Finally the group made it to Rockefeller Center, where the world-famous Christmas tree was on full display and the annual angels were blowing their horns. As a special treat, all were treated to the first-ever Snowflake Spectacular at Saks Fifth Avenue, a stunning show of enormous, electric snowflakes that blinked, winked, and sparkled in sync with familiar holiday tunes. |
After all this time in the cold, the group went across the street to warm up inside beautiful Gothic-style St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Though dinner had been planned for after the train returned to Newark, several students were too hungry to wait and so everyone took a detour to the closest McDonald’s for some traditional American fast food. |
Warmed and ready to go back outside, the group made their way back to the PATH train at Manhattan Mall for the return trip. After some hilarious confusion with buying tickets, a few lost-then-found-again mishaps with the trains, the group managed to finally find themselves all on the same train and headed back home. |
