Grammar and Composition 26:049:500 (N3 credits) This course is designed for graduate students who demonstrate a need for formal grammar instruction by a writing score on the CELT of below 85. The course will focus on such essential aspects of academic writing as assessing audience and purpose, organizing material according to levels of specificity, constructing a well-formed definition, writing a problem-solution paper, data-commentary, summary, and critique. Grammar instruction will focus on the structures that apply to these particular assignments.
Graduate ESL Seminar 26:049:501 (N3 credits) The prerequisite for this course is the successful completion of Grammar and Composition (26:049:500) or special permission. This course is designed for graduate students who obtain a score of 85 and higher on the CELT writing test, but still demonstrate residual problems with grammar and writing. The one-day-a-week class meeting is supplemented by a mandatory weekly individual meeting. The course focuses on writing academic essays, reviews, critiques, and reports. |
