Comprehension and Conversation 21:049:109 (N3 credits) This course is designed for both undergraduate and graduate students whose listening scores on CELT are below 85. In this course, students work on improving the skills of speaking and understanding spoken English. Oral comprehension is developed by listening to a variety of materials including taped lectures and software in the PALS Computer Lab. Students learn techniques to identify important information such as key words and practice note-taking. Students also learn how to prepare formal presentations and informal talks, as well as how to answer and ask questions. The themes chosen are those appropriate for academic work.
Grammar and Composition 21:049:110 (N3 credits) This course is meant to prepare students for English Composition ESL Section (21:355:098). It is designed to help students develop the ability to write grammatically correct paragraphs and essays, to read critically in English and to correct grammatical weaknesses. Students will write a minimum of eight essays during the semester. Grades and evaluation will be based on final revisions and overall progress in the course.
Advanced Pronunciation 21:049:113 (N3 credits) This course is designed for both undergraduate and graduate students who have problems producing the right sounds to make their speech comprehensible and who get a score of 3 out of 5 on the PALS speaking test. The course covers the correct articulation of individual English sound sequences including unstressed sounds, reduced forms, stress, rhythm, and intonation. Students are expected to practice a minimum of one hour per week in the PALS Computer Lab. |
